Talinum fruticosum, Vegetable

  About Tim & Esther

Talinum fruticosum is a tropical herbaceous perennial plant in family Portulacaceae. It is native to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is cultivated as a leaf vegetable in West Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the warmer parts of North and South America. It is commonly known as Ceylon spinach, Florida spinach, potherb fameflower, waterleaf, cariru, Surinam purslane, Philippine spinach, Lagos bologi, and sweetheart.

Talinum fruticosum can grow up to 30-90 cm tall. It is erect with broad, fleshy leaves, and produces small, pink flowers.

Talinum fruticosum is high in vitamin A and C, iron, and calcium. Those who suffered from kidney disorders, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis should avoid taking this plant as vegetable, because of its high content of oxalic acid.
